Burns of Various Degrees:

Understanding, Treatment, and Care

An estimated 398,000 burn injuries receive medical treatment each year. Burns are injuries to the skin and other tissues caused by heat, chemicals, electricity, sunlight, or radiation. They can range from minor to severe.

Burns need to be treated immediately for effective care and recovery, but they also need long-term care to ensure proper healing. At Freedom Health, we provide comprehensive homebound care services to help patients recover from burns in the comfort of their own homes.

The Importance of Burn Care

Did you know?: Burn admissions peak from May to August, accounting for 37.5% of annual hospital admissions.

Burn injuries require immediate and appropriate care to minimize damage and facilitate healing. Different burns require specific treatments, and knowing how to handle each type is essential.

Burns can cause a myriad of complications, including infections, dehydration, and severe scarring, which can impact a patient’s physical and emotional well-being. Expert care is available for long-term wounds, especially for homebound patients.

Types of Burns

Early and accurate assessment of the burn degree, followed by medical intervention, can prevent further tissue damage and reduce the risk of complications. Proper care and rehabilitation play an integral role in the recovery process, allowing patients to regain their health and quality of life.

First-Degree Burns

Characteristics:

  • It affects only the outer layer of the skin (epidermis)
  • Redness and pain
  • Dry, no blisters

Treatment:

  • Cool the burn with running water for several minutes
  • Apply aloe vera or a moisturizing lotion
  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers if necessary
  • Keep the burn clean and covered to prevent infection

Second-Degree Burns

Characteristics:

  • It affects both the outer layer (epidermis) and underlying layer (dermis) of the skin
  • Red, blistered, and swollen skin
  • Severe pain

Treatment:

  • Cool the burn with running water for 10-15 minutes
  • Do not pop blisters; cover them with a sterile, non-stick bandage
  • Apply antibiotic ointment to prevent infection
  • Seek medical attention for proper wound care and dressing changes
  • Pain management may include over-the-counter or prescribed medications

Third-Degree Burns

Characteristics:

  • Extend into deeper tissues (fat, muscle, or bone)
  • White, blackened, or charred skin
  • Numbness due to nerve damage

Treatment:

  • Call emergency services immediately
  • Do not remove burnt clothing stuck to the skin
  • Cover the burn with a cool, moist, sterile bandage or cloth
  • Do not immerse the burn in water
  • Provide comfort and reassurance while waiting for emergency medical help
